Well, it’s that time of the year again, folks. For 11 months out of the year, XXL is a fairly irrelevant hip-hop magazine whose star-making abilities have waned over the years as Soundcloud and Youtube have eclipsed print publications in terms of creating buzz for an artist. However, for one precious month, we all tune in as they announce their Freshman list, the ten hottest rappers in the game according to online polls and editor’s choice.
Honestly, who knows if the whole process is crooked or not. Maybe managers or record labels are paying off XXL to put certain artists on the cover to garner hype. Remember that one time Kidd Kidd got picked as a Freshman even though he had been in G-Unit for like ten years? Yeah, sometimes the picks make little to no sense.
With that being said, we here at Local Savage have our predictions ready for who will be included in this year’s class. Below is our list, but what we are really interested in is who you think will be chosen. Comment your choices, or let us know why we’re wrong with ours.
Lil Peep – the hottest white rapper on the Internet with tons of crossover potential. Be on the lookout for him this year.
Smokepurpp – Sure, he’s not the most original emcee out there. But he’s got that No Jumper hype, and lots of industry cosigns.
Lil Pump – the Mexican Chief Keef. This dude seems to be everywhere these days, so his placement on the list would come as no surprise.
XXXTentacion – Do we really need to explain this one?
Playboi Carti – We all know he’s got a ton of hype and hasn’t even dropped a tape yet. A shoe-in for sure.
Ugly God – Lil B’s stylistic son has been making waves over the past year, and has proven himself a viral hit. A fan favorite that’s a guaranteed pick.
Famous Dex – After linking up with Rich the Kid, his career really took off. Bro’s got undeniable buzz right now, and has inspired a whole litter of copycats.
A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie – One of the hottest rappers in New York right now, and has been dipping into R&B as well. If they picked August Alsina a few years ago, they’ll pick A Boogie this year.
Dae Dae – With two huge hits last year, including the Atlanta smash “Spend It,” Dae Dae has the perfect amount of buzz around his name to make the list.
Madeintyo – “Uber Everywhere” was literally everywhere, and he’s been linking up with big names ever since. Definitely expect to see him on the list.
So what do you think? Are we completely wrong? Give us your opinion.
